An
appraisal is an estimate of the approximate retail replacement value
of jewellery. The estimate is provided in writing, and is accompanied
by a photograph of the piece. This can be used for insurance coverage
or other purposes. It is important to understand that an appraisal
is not the same as a grading report. An appraisal establishes monetary
value, whereas a grading report evaluates a diamond's characteristics
(such as cut, clarity, carat, colour etc.). Grading reports do not
provide any suggestion of monetary value, only quality. This can be
used in the appraisal process, along with an examination of the specific
stone or piece of jewellery.
