You probably don't think of your diamond as
fragile — after all, it is a stone! But diamonds can be damaged,
and their sparkle can be reduced without regular care and cleaning.
Though
diamonds are the hardest substance known to man, a diamond can scratch
another diamond. For that reason, jewellery should not be stored
together since it can be scratched or tangled. Diamond jewellery
should never be worn while doing heavy work, but even everyday activity
can loosen a setting. It is very important to visit a professional
jeweller every four months to check your diamond's mountings and
settings to ensure they are secure.
To be sure your diamonds always sparkle, it is
important to keep them clean. There are several recommended methods,
including:
Professional Cleaning
This is always the best option, and it gives
you the opportunity to have the jewellery checked to ensure that
the prongs haven't bent or weakened.
Jewellery Cleaners
Any brand name liquid jewellery cleaner can
be used to clean your jewellery at home. Simply follow the instructions
on the label.
Mild Liquid Detergent
At home you can soak your jewellery in a
small bowl of warm water with any mild liquid detergent. Simply
brush the jewellery with a soft toothbrush while it is in the suds.
Then, rinse each piece under warm running water. Be sure to always
place the stopper in the sink! After cleaning, pat the piece or
pieces dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
Household Ammonia
Place the jewellery in a small bowl containing
a half-and-half solution of ammonia and cold water for thirty minutes.
Lift out and gently brush the front and back of the mounting with
a small soft brush. Rinse and pat dry.
